The Longer Story
I am a person who always loves to learn. Consequently, after more than two decades in college classes of one kind or another, I have degrees in psychology (BA), counseling (MA), computer science(BS), and education (MS and ED.D). I have always worked while attending my college classes as that was the only way to pay for them. Some people see this constant learning as someone who couldn’t decide what she wanted to be. Others see it as some kind of Peter Pan syndrome, never willing to grow up. The reality is I’m just really interested in a lot of different things.
I’m certain I was meant to be a woman of means who could spend her time wandering the world and learning about everything. I have no clue what happened to the rich, royal family I was meant to be born into.
Fortunately, all that searching blessed me with a 40 year career that allowed me to explore the world both intellectually and spiritually from many different perspectives. My work ranged from Family Counselor to Software Developer, and eventually ended after 15 years in Academia. At the end of my academic career, I took some opportunities to consult on education projects in Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.
All my travel taught me that we are more the same than different. Everyone I met is striving for the same things–a life of meaning and vitality, a life of love and deep friendships, a life that one can look back on and say it was well-lived.
In early 2013 I decided that so much travel for business was no longer fun. I’d rather be home, writing books and spending time in the community I love.
Retiring gave me the opportunity to stay home more often and to take time to enjoy the beauty the Pacific Northwest has to offer. I now pursue the career I’ve wanted since high school, being a full-time author and entrepreneur.
Why I Write
I spend my time exploring current and future world possibilities in both fiction and non-fiction. My characters are based on the messy relationships we all have with each other and with our world. I wonder what makes us rise above the daily drudgery to do something special–whether that is creating a piece of art, smiling at a stranger, or saving someone’s life. What makes someone come out of the corner to become a hero in someone’s life? What are the small things that add up over a lifetime and make a difference? It is from this that my tagline finally revealed itself just as it does in my characters: Making heroic choices one messy moment at a time.
I still believe in England Dan’s and John Ford Coley’s 1970’s lyric “Love is the Answer.” Love, compassion, forgiveness, accepting and loving one’s true self, and finding home and identity are all themes in my novels. Sometimes it’s love of self in order to find strength to get out of bad situations. Sometimes it’s the innocent, all encompassing love of a child or an animal. Often it is the love between friends and family–the kind that is tested by time but is always there because of the ability to forgive mistakes.
I also write of romantic love in all of it’s guises–from friendship to companions, from the blush of infatuation to passion and commitment. I believe that a committed, long-term relationship–whether a friendship or a life partner–is the most difficult and frustrating undertaking we pursue. Yet, it is the most full incarnation of love. It is in all that work, over years and years of ups and downs, that teaches us to entrust our true self to someone else. Scary…but oh so fulfilling.
